Ive never been so mad at a movie ever, from the beginning I have built hope for dani she has lost her family, and was trying to find peace with her relationship, when she arrived there I realized that she wasnt brushing off the odd like the rest of the group and assumed that she somehow would escape as she was studying to becoming a psychologist you would think she is in the right headspace to understand misbehavior and maybe play along but finding a way out right. Oh more satanic rituals. Midsommar yt. I'm a little late in commenting so I'm not sure if you'll notice this but as a cult survivor myself, I appreciate this video and explanation so much. I was born and raised by people who were recruited into the cult so for many years I knew little outside of its parameters of thought. While it was a bible-based cult, the tactics were all the same. At the time of its inception in the 80s, nearly all of the recruits were Gen-X teenagers from dysfunctional and abusive households. It was no wonder people like my parents were so susceptible to believing the cult when they were told how evil the world outside was. Anyone looking in would think we were just another suburban church with a warm and welcoming community with many finding great happiness and love upon joining. They thought they found their happy ending. Until shit would get real. Real fast. By the 90s most of those teens grew up and had families within the cult. Soon the very childhood dysfunction and abuse they sought to escape was reframed as child training to be further perpetuated. The very trauma that compelled them to seek out the cult continued in the next lot of children. The slightest things could be utilised by those in charge to inflict extreme sanctions upon adult and child alike. There were public humiliations, deliverances, relationships forced apart, forced marriage, and excommunications alike. This was no happy ending. Time outside the cult has shown me that while those years were certainly my worst, there's still a lot left to be desired with how things are in the world right now. We need to continue the fight for things like equality, better grassroots communities, healthier communication and emotional expression being championed, a sense of freedom of individuality that allows people to contribute greatly within their communities rather than the selfish individualism so often pushed, and a vigilance that prevents harmful actions being perpetuated in the name of belief. Society's flaws drive vulnerable people into the arms of abusive structures, be it a romantic partner, toxic friendship, or a cult. Continuing such a toxic cycle does not make for a happy ending.

So while I can't say that I would never fall under the spell, I saw this coming from a mile away. There was no catharsis. I instead wanted to carpet bomb the entire group.

First of all and most importantly, imo, the design, costumes and cinematography was stunning.
The movie itself was very engaging too. You knew what would happen, to an extent, but it's still able to keep you on the edge of your seat. The story felt original to me and I constantly felt myself thinking "who can think of this? During parts of the movie; and that's a good thing.
The movie was very shocking and also scary without resorting to pop outs. I detest pop outs so that was welcomed.
The story had a bunch of plot holes and it stretched reality - they all would have noped right out of there after the elders committed suicide - and that detracted a bit from the overall quality for me.

As a movie featuring a Pagan sort of cult, it was interesting, specially the whole idea behind the cult, the Harga commune was fascinating at least but it all delivered in a long winded format while the center plot was quite simple, IMO... a girl struggling in terrible grief by losing her family suddenly & having a challenging time in relationship with her a trip to Sweden & find themselves in a strange commune & their seemingly normal but weirdly screwed up rituals.
The visuals, set designs & cinematography all were excellent but the story did felt like dragged excessively at times which affected the momentum it was trying to build, mostly in the 2nd half.
There's no complaint against the central character, Dani, who almost got a perfect treatment but her supporting ones, specially the one-dimensional, self-absorbed boyfriend needed some little more closure & focus, I guess.
Where Aster's HEREDITARY had an uncanny feel all around with segments unfolding through a good pace of twists & turns... MIDSOMMER failed to achieve that here for its overly long narrative. It could have been more intact & little more exciting, something like THE WICKER MAN (1973.
